Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and Aesthetics
There is a more serious end of this spectrum: body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a mental health condition defined by a persistent preoccupation with perceived defects in appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others.
This preoccupation is associated with significant distress or impairment and repetitive behaviors such as checking, grooming, or reassurance-seeking. In some cases, BDD is associated with anxiety, social avoidance, or co-occurring eating disorders.
In aesthetic medicine, this distinction is important. Aesthetic procedures are designed to improve physical features or performance, not to resolve or “fix” underlying psychological issues.
For this reason, aesthetic procedures should be performed by medical professionals who can evaluate patient expectations, screen for unrealistic expectations, and determine whether psychological treatment or referral is in the patient’s best interest. The goal is to improve outcomes without negatively impacting a patient’s self-perception or overall well-being.
